What a majestic game. I bought it during the Lunar New Year sale on Steam for $10 + tax including all the DLCs, and so far I’m enjoying it on a completely different level to Fallout 4. I’ve previously played Morrowind and Oblivion, but I lost interest in those relatively quickly for whatever reason. It still looks good with the HD texture pack and there’s such a large modding community that I got the community patches/bugfixes along with some interface improvements so that it’s better for PC gameplay.
The world seems massive and I’ve only begun to scratch the surface; I decided to start as a High Elf but early Destruction spells are weak, so I find myself advancing in one-handed weapons and shields more than anything else.
Since I did mention Fallout 4 - I’m at the crossroads where I need to decide which faction to go with, but in all honesty, I just don’t give a fuck anymore. I think FO4 is going to remain unfinished until I forget about how uninteresting the game becomes the further you get into it. I still enjoyed the hell out of it, but it’s like you eventually hit a wall where your enjoyment doesn’t just plateau, but it falls off a cliff. There’s so much good about this game but I feel it came at the expense of story/dialog choices and more choice in gameplay (i.e. why the hell couldn’t I be a raider or Triggerman).
We’ll see how I feel about Skyrim once I’ve put in the same amount of time as I did in Fallout 4, which was about 72 hours over three months.

You'll hit the same sort of wall with skyrim, but much much later in the game than in fallout.

If you ever hit a wall visit Nexus Mods. You’ll thank me later. Just play the game through vanilla first though. It made a difference to me.

Just wait until you get into the rest of the mods.
I... I have a problem.

I was never an Elder Scrolls fan before Skyrim - couldn’t stand Morrowwind or Oblivion. I just love exploring/looting the world so much :) . On a lightly modded playthrough, I put over 150 hours into it before I actually completed the main quest. My favourite class to play was a 2-handed warrior with light armour, after trying mage for my first playthrough.
It’s simply amazing the depth of the modding community for this game. You can add incredible player-created campaigns, dungeons, items, graphical improvements. Honestly, I think the mod scene is half the reason why this game is still viewed an exceptional. With mods, you can easily get 200+ hours in a playthrough.
I agree with the Fallout 4 faction conundrum. Whenever I have a “choice” game, like FO/Skyrim/Mass Effect/etc, I always try to get an “optimal”, or “compromising” outcome. Fallout 4 is frustrating because no matter what I do, I’m forced into 1 of 4 choices. Reminds of a certain game where the colours were Red, Green, or Blue...
I’ll be waiting for the mod community to change the story for Fallout 4 to allow much more freedom of choice for my second, DLC filled playthrough

Yeah, that was my experience. The graphics and engine are awful, then there was just too much grinding and everything simply became kind of a random hodgepodge. I never finished it. Same deal with Fallout 4.
New Vegas was so much better.

Bad news destruction is weak the whole way through. Magic is so pathetic in Skyrim. You don’t do nearly enough damage, you run out of magic immediately and magic armour is pretty much worthless.
So with all that said I highly recommend these mods: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/22…
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/58…
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/44…
All they do is make the game fair and magic a legit option later in the game.

I wired up a playthrough with 150+ mods, got it to not CTD, aaaand, figured out that I didn’t have the RAM required to support the gradually increasing memory usage, and was forced to gut a bunch :(
Have 6GB of Tri-channel, needed about 12. lol

Once I finished the main quest line and guild quests, I almost never fire Skyrim up, same with Fallout.

Fallout 4 is actually my favorite in the series.

I take it you prefer FPS games. I feel like it is more an FPS game with a little RPG (in an engine that isn’t great for FPS) vs an RPG with a little FPS (VATS should minimize this).
A game like Fallout 1 & 2 is more interesting to me. Combat is equipment, choices, modifiers, and a dice roll, but there’s no timing or aiming element.

I love how immersive that game is. I’ve only done one play through, but got up over level 60 and finished all (or most, no DLC) of the quests and discovered, AFAIK, all locations. There is so much to explore and everything about the game is excellent except for glitches and graphics issues. The music, all the different books that you can actually read and often play a role different quests, the dialogue from the NPC’s (sure, it gets old and repetitive after a bit, but it’s still better than most games).
I only lost interest once I finished the main storyline. Which I knew would happen so I only did bits of that every once in a while.

I played Skyrim on PS3 and loved it! It sort of consumed me and all I wanted to be was dragon born.
